The sensitive within the tools

“ Qu'est-ce que la sonification peut faire aux manières sensibles de connaître la biodiversité ? ”

In this fourth and final episode, Léone explores the sensory dimension of tools, that is, their way of shaping ecological knowledge through quantification, modeling, and visualization. The predominance of relying on numbers and their visualizations (numerical indicators, calculations, diagrams, maps) is questioned here through the lens of sonification. This sonic approach aims to offer alternative experiences capable of giving voice to other living beings within projects. Conducted with researchers from the CRESSON laboratory (ENSA Grenoble), an ecoacoustician, and musicians, a research-creation experiment extends the central hypothesis of the thesis: biodiversity tools act as sensory operators that guide project practices by working on the perceptions and emotions of those who use them.

In this series of four podcasts, we invite you to delve into the work of Léone, a researcher at the agency, who recently defended her CIFRE PhD thesis in Science and Technology Studies, supervised by Jérôme Denis at the Centre for the Sociology of Innovation (École des Mines, Université PSL).

A series presented by Léone-Alix Mazaud and Jasmine Léonardon. Editing: Théa Lingrand and Louise André.
