PCA-STREAM supports Café Joyeux in its mission by designing a pop-up social enterprise café. By working to promote the professional integration of people with mental and cognitive disabilities—primarily those with Down syndrome and autism—Café Joyeux helps raise awareness of disability and bring it back to the heart of our cities. Three locations, in Rennes and Paris, roast and distribute socially responsible and sustainable coffee, accompanied by a menu of responsibly sourced food. PCA-STREAM’s interior design division has created a new pop-up location: the Café Joyeux pop-up store on the Champs-Élysées. It was designed to provide a custom work environment for a team of unique chefs, salespeople, servers, and hosts, in a society where only 0.5% of people with intellectual disabilities work in mainstream settings.
A Custom-Designed Space
To provide a comfortable and functional work environment, the interior space was designed around the practical movements of the team members. Lined up in a long, narrow layout with a clear, simple, and repetitive workflow, it allows the teams to move about as they’re accustomed to, passing trays from hand to hand. The main space, dedicated to welcoming customers and socializing, stretches 25 meters long, covering a total area of 194 square meters. The upper floor is reserved for private events, allowing the café team to organize by levels; dedicated to seminars or business breakfasts, it offers an affordable option rarely found in the Central Business District. On the ground floor, the preparation area is open to the public to encourage interaction with customers and ensure no one is kept out of sight in a back room. This space for learning and service is designed to foster knowledge sharing and interaction, while raising awareness of socially responsible employment.
An inspiring showcase on the Champs-Élysées
Café Joyeux is establishing itself on the prestigious Champs-Élysées, supported by a network of committed partners. In an area where generic, globalized retail sits side by side with luxury brands, this innovative, sustainable, and people-centered concept marks a symbolic transformation of the avenue. Right in the heart of the Parisian legend, it offers Café Joyeux new visibility. By embodying Café Joyeux’s visual identity, the interior architecture embraces its unconventional nature. Yellow and raw chipboard are combined in a dynamic interplay of surprising angles and curves. Upon entering, the eye is drawn to the counter, where a journey begins, designed to unfold like a narrative. As visitors move from one stop to the next, they discover the origins of coffee, the stages of roasting, and the history of this exemplary company. A large display case showcases the various objects that define Café Joyeux’s identity within irregular compartments. The overall atmosphere, designed with a homey aesthetic, invites customers and staff to feel right at home. The furniture provided by La Redoute Intérieurs is complemented by Vertigo pendant lights, designed by the Constance Guisset studio, whose sculptural form enhances the space’s double-height ceiling. Warm, open, and inclusive, Café Joyeux is setting up shop on the Champs-Élysées for a few months to show everyone that its team members can work in a corporate setting, right in the heart of the city, creating value by bringing to life a unique and inviting space.
